No matter how safe a photographer tries to be while photographing lightning, there is an element of danger to the endeavor. Even when you give a thunderstorm a wide berth, one of the most dangerous possibilities (though rare) is positive lightning Ð a bolt that reaches out from the positively charged top of a cloud to a negatively charged spot on the landscape, usually outside the storm’s perimeter in an area you feel safe.

But, this was not one of those moments… Sometimes, you are just too darn close! When you can see this kind of detail on the tendrils of a lightning strike, that just might be too close.
